In the area of Kornati National Park, environmentally friendly mooring sites have so far been established at a total of sixteen locations. At each mooring site there is a certain number of buoys for mooring boats up to 16 and 26 meters in length, which visitors can use free of charge with a valid entrance ticket.

Buoy locations (total of 164 buoys):

  1. Tomasovac Bay – Suha Punta (10 buoys)
  2. Gornji Statival Bay (8 buoys)
  3. Donji Statival Bay (12 buoys)
  4. Pod Bižanj Bay (5 buoys)
  5. Strižnja Bay (10 buoys)
  6. Lojena Bay – Levrnaka (13 buoys)
  7. Anica Bay (18 buoys up to 16 m and 4 buoys up to 26 m)
  8. Kravljačica Bay (10 buoys)
  9. Šipnate Bay (10 buoys)
  10. Vrulje Bay (18 buoys)
  11. Gujak Bay (10 buoys)
  12. Ravni Žakan – Zmorašnja (5 buoys)
  13. Kameni Žakan (15 buoys up to 16 m and 3 buoys up to 26 m)
  14. Opat Bay (5 buoys)
  15. Gornji Bok Bay – Smokvica (3 buoys)
  16. Lojena Bay – Smokvica (5 buoys)

The mooring system, i.e., the buoys, has not been installed in the conventional way by attaching them to concrete blocks. Instead, the so-called “Earthanchor” system is used — a method that involves drilling through sand and sediment into the rocky substrate, where anchors are directly driven into the seabed. The anchor remains embedded in the borehole without causing significant damage to the seabed.

During both the installation and the subsequent use of the mooring sites, there is no contact with marine vegetation. This is extremely important for the preservation of seagrass meadows, which is why this type of mooring system is considered more environmentally friendly compared to the use of concrete blocks.

Each mooring position consists of a circular sea area with a mooring anchor in the center and a mooring buoy with a final loop of the mooring line attached next to it. It is important to note that this solution ensures that the mooring chain does not touch the seabed, even at the lowest tide level.

The mooring works in such a way that the vessel is tied by the bow to the mooring line and, depending on the effect of the wind on the vessel, rotates around the mooring buoy.

With the successful installation of this mooring system, the long-term goal of the Public Institution “Kornati National Park” has begun to be realized: to establish mooring sites in all 19 designated mooring bays and to completely prohibit free anchoring within the national park area.
