Latinsko idro is an association that fosters and promotes the maritime heritage of the Murter-Betina region. But it is in fact neither ship nor sail, neither a regatta nor a tourist fest... Latinsko idro is a reminder of a way of life, of an exceptional area, a spiritual world and its existence. It is a synthesis of all the activities and methods, knowledge and crafts, all the marine skills and trials, of spirit and belief, everything which was interwoven in these magical waters and which originated in ships. They were the pivoting point around which everything revolved. Nothing in this unusual part of the Adriatic was possible without them and their sails. Like in the Book of Genesis: Everything was ship and all were made through it. We are it. Latin sail - that's us.
A large wooden boat regatta is the central event of the Latin Sail Week, which takes place each year at the end of September.

  The association was founded for the purpose of protecting the threatened or diminished rights of owners in the Kornati National Park and the islands that fall under the geographical term Kornati; for preservation of natural and cultural heritage; for putting an end to the decay and renovation of Kornati property and to encourage the awareness among the younger generations about the value of traditional Kornati properties and the way of life there.
Kornati are considered to be the islands that geography and traditions of the local population regard as Kornati, i.e. the island of Kornat with its islands, and the islands Žut, Sita and Gangarol with theirs.
Since its establishment in 2000, the Association has been active in the implementation of its objectives in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Nature, the Kornati National Park public institution, the local government, other similar associations and organizations at home and abroad and all natural and legal persons who support and encourage the work of the Association.

   The Boris Turčinov family farm carries on two traditional family activities from Kornati – olives and bees.
"My uncle, Ferdinand Juraga, was the organizer and member of the Murter Beekeepers Cooperative, founded in 1934. Since Murter and Kornati olive growing is rather well known, I will look at honey and its place in my family's tradition.
In short, it can be said the Kornati honey is:
  • a souvenir – because it is a traditional Kornati product;
  • food – because it is a tasty and nutritional food, naturally pure sage honey – or rather a delicacy, produced in an environmentally clean area;
  • medicine – because the locals have always used it as a remedy for respiratory diseases.

The fact that some 30 years ago you could no longer find honey from Kornati in Murter, prompted me, Boris Turčinov, head of our family farm, to renew the family beekeeping tradition. This sparked interest in other people in Kornati, so that today there are five of us beekeepers. Thanks to this, you can again find this authentic Kornati product in Murter. Personally, I am happy that with my actions and example I have become, in a sense, a bridge between the past and present beekeepers in Kornati. The result of our efforts is that, aside from our personal advantage, we have managed to extend and remove from oblivion a traditional Kornati activity and make a high quality product."

The Kornati archipelago as we know it certainly would not look like this without a human touch. Traces of man, his activities and jobs he did to live and survive in this region are the basis for the creation of the Real Kornati programme.

The guests have the opportunity to live the life of the dwellers of Kornati with their hosts, learning about agriculture, livestock and fisheries activities, about food preparation and overseas transport and ships.
The programme participants also have time for recreation, sports or sightseeing. Walking, hiking or sightseeing with a professional guide, as well as swimming, diving or simply reading a book in meditative silence – it's just a matter of choice. Activities depend on weather conditions, the season, time of the year, while for possible rainy days we have prepared educational programmes with lectures and projections about the history of Kornati. A TRUE LIFE EXPERIENCE...

  I do not think of Kornati as something sensational – Kornati are a place to live in harmony with nature – this is their biggest value! My grandpa lived like that, I live here and my children will as well – I hope! - says Damir Crvelin. As a true inhabitant of Kornati whose entire life is linked to these islands, he is full of expert knowledge and experience that should be kept from oblivion and be used for sustainable management of the entire Kornati National Park.
